CHRONOLOGY: The PBC and Guinea-Bissau (October 2007 - April 2008)

 

October 19, 2007
The Security Council's presidential statement following the analysis of the Secretary General's report underscores the letter from "the Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau requesting that Guinea-Bissau be placed on the Peacebuilding Commission, and expresses its intent to consider the request as a matter of priority".

December 11, 2007
In a letter to the PBSO, the Security Council recommends the inclusion of Guinea-Bissau on the PBC's agenda.

 

December 19, 2007
Guinea-Bissau officially became the third country on the Commission's agenda - joining Burundi and Sierra Leone - after the Security Council backed a request from the Government of the country. Ambassador Maria Luiza Viotti, the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the UN, chairs the PBC's country-specific configuration on Guinea-Bissau.

January 22-28, 2008
Visit to Bissau of a mission headed by the Ambassador Maria Luiza Viotti with the purpose of building a partnership with the Government, civil society, the private sector and international partners on the next steps forward for the Commission's work, in particular the Strategic Plan of Peace Consolidation and the National Steering Committee.

February 20, 2008
The Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Martinho Dafa Cabi, presented the priorities and challenges of Guinea-Bissau to the PBC in New York during the second formal meeting of the specific committee. These peacebuilding priorities are: the reform of public administration, consolidation of the rule of law and security sector reforms, promotion of professional technical training and youth employment and support for vulnerable groups.

March 26, 2008
The Secretary-General report on Guinea-Bissau considers the country's inclusion on the PBC's agenda and recognizes the renewed commitment of the international community to support the Government of Guinea-Bissau's efforts for implementation of the necessary reforms and promote political and economical stability as well as improvement of the population's living conditions. According to Ban Ki-moon, the commission will provide "valuable assistance in post-conflict reconstruction and the consolidation of peace."

April 6 - 11, 2008

A PCC high-level's mission visits Guinea-Bissau.

April 28, 2008
The United Nations Peacebuilding Fund agreed to provide Guinea-Bissau with $6 million to support "quick-win" projects related to the upcoming legislative elections Judicial and Security Sector reforms and youth employment.
