SRSG meets Transitional President to review key issues

30 October 2012 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Guinea-Bissau, Joseph Mutaboba, and Transitional President Serifo Nhamadjo met today at the Office of the President in Bissau.

Among other things, the meeting reviewed developments in key areas linked to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2048. These included ongoing efforts nationally to get Bissau-Guineans to talk and solve their problems through genuine dialogue; efforts by the United Nations, in collaboration with the African Union (AU), to contribute to a harmonization of the support of international partners to Guinea-Bissau for a return to constitutional order, Mr Mutaboba, who was accompanied by Deputy Special Representative Gana Fofang, told journalists after the meeting.

Mr. Mutaboba said the need for frank, inclusive dialogue among Guinea-Bissauans to resolve their problems was highlighted during the encounter, which also reviewed progress made in talks between military and political actors towards unblocking the country's parliament and moving the transition forward in a peaceful and productive manner.

Other major issues at the meeting were the 21-22 October events, concern about their potential effects, and ways in which the UN, Au and other partners could help the country to resolve its various challenges, including in the area of human rights.
