UN supports electoral commission to establish regional offices - inaugurated new headquarters in Bafatá

The headquarters of the Regional Election Commission (CRE) of the Bafatá region was inaugurated on August 3 by the Chair of the Parliament, Cipriano Cassamá, and the Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary General, David McLachlan-Karr who is also responsible for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Guinea-Bissau.

David McLachlan-Karr, explained that UNDP financed this project with a view to equip the CNE with regional structures that would be able to safely host the logistical resources of the electoral operations and to allow the reduction of the costs related to the rental of private houses.

The Deputy Representative further stated that UNDP "was always on the side of Guinea-Bissau, above all in the area of ​​capacity-building of democratic institutions, in particular, electoral process management bodies."

Cipriano Cassamá recalled that "there is no point in holding elections that are considered free, fair and transparent," if we do not invest in the consolidation of governments resulting from these elections.

The Parliament Chair, took the opportunity to ask the President of the Republic to implement the Conakri Agreement for the benefit of the Guinean nation. "And if he does, he will have all my support and comfort, and together, we will work for the political and social stabilization of Guinea-Bissau," he added.

José Pedro Sambú, interim president of the National Elections Commission, reaffirmed the importance of this work, which will allow to meet the “demands and challenges of electoral processes and, consequently, contribute to the drastic reduction of electoral budgets.”
