UN Secretary-General encourages Guinea-Bissau political leaders to implement “relevant” ECOWAS decisions

Yesterday, 24 April, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in a statement released by his spokesman, “took note” of the decision by the Authority of Heads of State and Community Government Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS), on April 22, recognizing Úmaro Sissoco Embaló as the winner of the December 2019 presidential elections in Guinea-Bissau.

UN Secretary-General encourages Guinea-Bissau political leaders to implement “relevant” ECOWAS decisions

António Guterres also asked political actors to work in an inclusive way to form a new government, according to the Constitution.

“The Secretary-General encourages all actors in Guinea-Bissau to work in an inclusive and constructive manner to implement the relevant ECOWAS decisions, particularly with regard to the appointment of a Prime Minister and the formation of a new Government, in total in accordance with the Constitution, and taking into account the results of the March 2019 legislative elections. ”

In its April 22 statement, ECOWAS had given a deadline of one month, until 22 May for the formation of the Government.
 
“The Secretary General reiterates the United Nations' commitment to continue to accompany Guineans in their efforts to consolidate peace, democracy and sustainable development.”, Reads in conclusion the statement attributable by the Spokesperson of the Secretary General, Stephan Dujarric.
