UN delegation meets national stakeholders to discuss Security Council presidential statement

24 April 2012 - A United Nations delegation headed by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator of the UN in Guinea-Bissau Gana Fofang on Saturday week-end initiated meetings with national stakeholders to transmit the Security Council presidential statement and discuss ways of its implementation in view of the country's current political and security situation.

The delegation on Saturday handed over a copy of the presidential declaration to the Military Command spokesperson Lt-col. Daba na Walna and today met with a PAIGC delegation, mainly composed of ministers of the last Government.

The meetings with national stakeholders come right after the Council's presidential declaration issued last Saturday, which requests the Secretary-General "to keep it informed on developments in Guinea-Bissau concerning the reestablishment of the constitutional order".

The Security Council presidential statement demands the immediate restoration of the constitutional order, the immediate and unconditional release of the interim President, the Prime minister and other officials detained and the conclusion of the presidential electoral process and considers possible targeted sanctions against the perpetrators and supporters of the military coup.

The council also requests the Secretary-General, through its Special Representatives, to support African Union, ECOWAS and CPLP efforts aimed at restoring the constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.
