Training of trainers on electoral procedures and dispute resolution

28 November 2013 - UNIOGBIS Chief Political Affairs Section (PAS), Martinho Chachiua, today called on the "commitment" of participants from civil society, political parties and the media, who attended a specialized training on electoral procedures and dispute resolution held in Bissau.

The series of three trainings was initiated by UNIOGBIS in association with the UNDP to assist the National Electoral Commission (CNE, Portuguese acronym) and the Office for technical support to electoral process (GTAPE, Portuguese acronym).

The objective of the three modules, two days each, was to ensure better understanding of election procedures and election dispute mechanism to all election stakeholders, and contribute in preventing election conflicts. The trainings also aimed at enhancing the capacity of political parties, media and civil society to conduct training of their respective agents on election procedures and election dispute mechanism.

Overall, the training of trainers brought together 130 participants to whom UNIOGBIS Chief PAS, Martinho Chachiua called on to "respect commitment to do their upmost to spread the knowledge they acquired on electoral procedures".

«We have to make sure that all stakeholders in the electoral process have the same understanding of rules and that, in fact, they see only one stake in the political landscape and not many and different plays in conflict" he explained.

"Next step for the participants is to start spreading the knowledge they acquired in their respective organizations, with a focus on media representatives who have an additional responsibility to inform people on good practices", he concluded.
