Statement by the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the UN Peacebuilding Commission on the political impasse in Guinea-Bissau

The PBC underscores that this situation has been negatively impacting on the functioning of the State, including the disruption of vital social services to the population.

The PBC exhorts all political and social stakeholders in Guinea Bissau to avoid any actions that could trigger a relapse into further instability.  The PBC encourages national authorities to abide by the commitments made at the Brussels round table and ensure a stable environment conducive to the disbursement of donors’ pledges. Without this cooperation, the delivery of progressive peace and economic dividends to the population could be at risk.

The Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the UN PBC urges the political leadership in Guinea-Bissau to foster a constructive atmosphere of compromise and cooperation through an inclusive dialogue aimed at building confidence and strengthening democracy. The international partners continue to stand firmly by Guinea-Bissau and calls upon its authorities to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.

The PBC welcomes the joint statement of 20 January issued by the AU, CPLP, ECOWAS, EU and UN and stands behind efforts of the regional actors in finding a peaceful solution to the current impasse. The PBC salutes the important mediation by the United Nations through its Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNIOGBIS, Mr. Miguel Trovoada by reaching out to relevant stakeholders to foster constructive dialogue and find a political solution to the crisis. Furthermore the PBC commends ECOWAS for maintaining its high-level engagement with Guinea-Bissau. The PBC would also welcome the holding of a meeting of the International Contact Group for Guinea-Bissau in the coming weeks as a timely opportunity to deepen the dialogue and cooperation between the international community and the Government of Guinea-Bissau. Furthermore the PBC would commend the re-engagement with a visit, at an appropriate moment, of former President Olusegun Obasanjo on behalf of ECOWAS.
