SRSG Ramos-Horta briefs Prime Minister on his mission to New York

16 May 2013 - The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, José Ramos-Horta, met Prime Minister Rui de Barros on Thursday in Bissau as part of his plan to brief national authorities on his recent mission to New York and the UN Security Council's meeting on Guinea Bissau.

Mr. Ramos-Horta informed the Prime Minister on the positive outcome of the Security Council meeting and the other meetings held with individual member states, multilateral institutions and UN agencies, Mr. Ramos-Horta reported that he found goodwill among the international partners to resume cooperation with Guinea Bissau.

He stated that the Security Council showed very positive inclinations towards the recommendations presented by the Secretary-General on Guinea-Bissau and a resolution is expected next week.

The Prime Minister thanked the SRSG for his efforts to assist Guinea Bissau. On the issue of inclusive government, he informed Mr. Ramos-Horta on the ongoing negotiations among the political actors.

The Special Representative also expressed concern about the beating of Mr. Ensa Sanha by a group of men last weekend. After receiving a briefing by the Prime Minister on steps taken by the Government following the attack, including evacuation of Mr. Sanha to Ziguinchor on the instruction of the Prime Minister, Mr. Ramos-Horta welcomed the establishment of a commission of inquiry led by the Minister of the Interior to look into the incident.

He also hailed the decision by the Public Prosecutor to open an inquiry into the case.
