SRSG Mutaboba and partners discuss ways to return’s normalcy

7 June 2012 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNIOGBIS today attended a meeting in Abidjan organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) and the UN to analyze the situation in Guinea-Bissau and Mali, two countries where military recently seized power.

 

Joseph Mutaboba participated at this meeting in accordance with the Security Council Resolution 2048 which "requests the Secretary-General to be actively engaged in this process, in order to harmonize the respective positions of international bilateral and multilateral partners, particularly the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, CPLP (Lusophone Community) and the European Union (EU), and ensure maximum coordination and complementarity of international efforts (...)".

SRSG Mutaboba is also holding regular consultations with diplomats in Bissau in view of Guinea-Bissau's return to normalcy, particularly the return to constitutional order. As for the Resolution 2048's implementation, the Council requests the Secretary-General to submit to the Council, above within 15 days of the adoption of this resolution, an initial report on the implementation of paragraph 1, which demands that the Military Command to restore and respect constitutional order and return to the barracks, and regular reports, every 90 days thereafter, on the implementation of all its elements, as well as on the humanitarian situation in Guinea-Bissau.

By the end of July, the Secretary-General regular's report on the situation in Guinea-Bissau will be discussed by the Security Council. In this session, SRSG Mutaboba and the Chair of the Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti of Brazil, will also brief the Council on the latest developments in the country.
