11 April 2014 - The intensive training of 1269 agents from Defense and Security institutions, including militaries assigned to secure elections has been closed on April 11th at a ceremony hosted by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Guinea-Bissau, José Ramos-Horta.

The event, held at the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS), was attended by authorities of the Transitional Government, diplomats and representatives of trainees who received their certificates of participation. SRSG and Police Commissioner Armando Nhaga signed the hand over agreement of equipment.

The implementation of 2014 National Security Plan for elections is coordinated by the General Commander of the Police through joint command structures.

UNIOGBIS, through its Rule of Law and Security Institutions (ROLSI) Section, in partnership with Brazil and Bissau João Landim training center provided technical and financial assistance.

The first phase of the training involved 60 national and international Police officers, and militaries trainers, held on 3-4 February at the National Defense Institute in Bissau, in partnership with University Jean Piaget. The second phase was dedicated to Bissau agents and the third phase, ended on 4 February, was for agents in the regions.

Those who have been trained will coordinate activities of the Joint Command over the country in order to secure elections and make sure they are held peacefully.

For a full mobility in their daily patrol operations and to deal with any emergency, the UN provided to the national police 100 bicycles and 25 motorbikes.
