Bissau, 26 May (UNIOGBIS/PIU) - The Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Mr. Taye-Brook Zerihoun, briefed today the Security Council on recent developments in Guinea-Bissau, and updated the Council on the good offices efforts of SRSG Modibo I. Touré since his arrival in the country.

22 May 2016 - The situation of prolonged political instability and, therefore deeply rooted in the consciousness of the Bissau Guinean society has raised a number of questions on how to find the solution for peace and to develop. After an 11 year-long struggle for independence, Guinea-Bissau only lived a few years of peace before, in 1998, plunging into a political and military conflict, the consequences of which remain in the political, economic and social spheres.

Bissau, 17 May 2016 (UNIOGBIS / PIU) - The Configuration for Guinea-Bissau of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) acknowledged on Monday the effective preventive and deterrent role of the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ECOMIB), and called on the international community to mobilize technical and financial resources and political support, to ensure the extension of its mandate beyond 30 June this year, the expiry date.

Bissau, April 21, 2016, UNIOGBIS - The Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office for Guinea-Bissau –UNIOGBIS- held in Bubaque in the archipelago of Bijagos from 21 to 22 April, a conference on maritime and border security, combating drug trafficking and protection of natural resources.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Modibo Touré of Mali as his new Special Representative for Guinea-Bissau and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS).

Guinea-Bissau and the United Nations have signed today a Partnership Framework for the period 2016-2020. Both signatories, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the country, Miguel Trovoada, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Artur Silva, praised the long-standing relationship between the UN and Guinea-Bissau.

A two-day meeting on 27-28 April – No mistida i estabilidade - will be held at the national parliament building in Bissau, with a view to promoting a reflection to support Guinea-Bissau entities in the search for a national consensus around stability.

Partnership Framework between the Government of Guinea-Bissau and the United Nations team for the period 2016-2020 will be signed on April 28, Thursday at 09:00 in the government palace by the UN Secretary general's Special Representative for Peacebuilding in Guinea-Bissau, Miguel Trovoada and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Artur Silva.
