ECOWAS intervenes, and negotiates a transition period of one year. Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo, acting Speaker of the National Assembly, becomes transitional president. Rui Duarte Barros, a former UMOEA Commissioner, is appointed Prime Minister. The UN Security Council imposes a travel ban on five senior military officials who led the coup.
