José Pedro Sambú elected president of the National Electoral Commission

Text

National Assembly met in a plenary session for the first time since December 2015. José Pedro Sambú, who had been serving as acting president of the National Electoral Commission, was elected to the post with 93 votes in favour, 1 abstention and 8 absentees. The National Assembly also adopted a bill to amend the Constitution, exceptionally extending the legislature beyond its four-year mandate, until November 2018. The following day, the Bissau-Guinean League of Human Rights (Liga Guineense dos Direitos Humanos) denounced the extension of the current legislature as unconstitutional.
