Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Tayé-Brook Zerihoun, Executive Director of the UN Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yury Fedotov and Ambassador Mauro Viera (Brazil), as the chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s Guinea-Bissau configuration briefed the Security Council today over the situation in Guinea-Bissau and challenges ahead of upcoming elections.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today [4 May] announced the appointment of José Viegas Filho of Brazil as his new Special Representative for Guinea-Bissau and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS).

Bissau, 5 April (UNIOGBIS/PIU) - Following the adoption on 28 February by the Security Council of resolution 2404, on the mandate of UNIOGBIS, the UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA) led a technical mission of UN entities to Guinea-Bissau on 26-30 March, to ensure the effective implementation of its revised mandate. In addition to UNIOGBIS, the mission met with United nations Country team in the country, key national stakeholders, and regional and international interlocutors. The signing ceremony of the Project Document “Support Electoral Cycle (2017-2019)”, developed in close partnership with the European Union, took place today at the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Bissau, in the presence of the Special Representative of the UN secretary General (SRSG) Modibo Touré and representatives of the international community.

The UN in Guinea joined several events in Bissau celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Guinea-Bissau, Modibo Touré, in a special audio message to mark the date, calls on all Bissau-Guineans to recognize women’s efforts in building their country, towards peace and prosperity.

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted yesterday the Resolution 2404 extending the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS) for 12 months beginning on 1 March 2018 until 28 February 2019.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS), Modibo I. Touré, speaking via videoconference from Bissau, briefed the Security Council today on the Secretary-General’s report on the situation in the country.

On 14 February, the UN Security Council will be briefed on the Report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the situation in Guinea-Bissau and the work of UNIOGBIS after which discussion will feed into Council members upcoming negotiations to renew the mandate of UNIOGBIS.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, express concern over the protracted political crisis in Guinea-Bissau despite the multiple opportunities offered to the main political stakeholders to arrive at a consensual arrangement.
