SRSG praises France’s pragmatism in the Guinea-Bissau Process

19 November 2013 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) of the United Nations, José Ramos-Horta, today held a meeting with France's Ambassador in Bissau, following which he praised the "pragmatism" of Paris in the accompaniment of the Guinean process.

"Actually, I recognize that since my arrival in Guinea-Bissau, France has demonstrated a great deal of sensitivity - given its long experience in the continent- and doing so with realism, pragmatism, without abandoning principles and knowing how to deal with complicated processes," said the SRSG following the meeting.

"France has so much respect among all political actors and even among the military in Guinea-Bissau. Its stance is very firm when it comes to the rule of law and human rights" he added.

José Ramos-Horta concluded that "France is appreciated for not hiding behind principles and for not avoiding dialogue" and, hence, it is "always a pleasure" to engage in dialogue with "diplomat friends, in the framework of the "excellent dialogue with the Quai d'Orsay " (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France).

On his part, the French Ambassador stressed that "José Ramos-Horta, in his capacity as SRSG, is playing a very important role in efforts for Guinea-Bissau to overcome the crisis".

"We are reasonably optimistic about the date scheduled for the holding of elections, because there are all the conditions available, including constitutional and budgetary," he indicated.

Ambassador Pierre Voillery also underscored "the enormous contribution of Timor-Leste, which has been decisive for the election process".
