SRSG Trovoada hopeful about upcoming donor conference

6 March 2015 - The Special Representative of the UN SG for Guinea-Bissau (SRSG), Miguel Trovoada, believes that the country will have the support of international partners at the donor conference scheduled for 25 March in Brussels.

In two interviews with the National Radio (RDN, Portuguese acronym) and RDP-Africa, SRSG Trovoada reaffirmed the determination of his Office to help the country be reunite with the international community and get resources to solve the problems of underdevelopment: "This donor conference is also a kind of consecration of the return to normality in the context of the restoration of relations between the international community and Guinea-Bissau", he said.

He went on adding that the donor conference is a high opportunity for cooperation that will allow the authorities, namely the government, obtain means and resources to lay the foundation for the economic and social development of Guinea-Bissau.

About the recent IMF's "satisfactory" review of the country's efforts that led to increasing government incomes, Trovoada emphasized that "when institutions like the World Bank or IMF, and others of the kind come to say that things are going well, bilateral partners feel more encouraged and safer on providing support to the country. It is a very important element of credibility for the upcoming donor conference".
