UNIOGBIS commits to support Resolution1325 National Action Plan

10 September 2014 - UNIOGBIS' Gender Unit today, concluded the restitution of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 National Action Plan (NAP) that was discussed in a Nairobi symposium in July 2014.

The purpose of this one day workshop that took place at UNIOGBIS Headquaters was to raise awareness about SCR 1325 (2000); to mobilize government to mainstream a gender perspective into all areas of peace and security; and to build national capacity within the public sector to develop/review a national action plan implementation of the resolution.

At the end of the meeting, the 25 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, the Police and Civil Society Organizations made five recommendations:
-Revision of the national action plan, and strategy implementation within a time frame of four years, in addition review the electoral law .
-Key ministries like Women, family and social solidarity, Defense ministry of justice should have focal points dedicated for the NAP.
-Include in the implementation committees: Judiciary police, communication, Civil Protection, and the Handicapped association including UNHCR to advise on influx refugees under protection of women and girls.
-The review of the NAP should include: Economic empowerment in addition to political participation, protection, participation at decision making levels of women.
-Ministry of women to facilitate a meeting with the NAP implementation committee to deliberate a way forward more so address the NAP budget issues in addition to holding women's regional consultations' on the NAP.

In his remarks, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau (DSRSG), Marco Carmignani, on behalf of the SRSG, committed to support the strategy of laying down the National action plan and see to it that it is implemented by the state.

Unanimously adopted by the Security Council in 2000, Resolution 1325 is a landmark resolution that provides an essential framework for women's full participation in conflict resolution and gender equality in all aspects of building peace and security. The Resolution calls on governments, international and regional institutions as well as civil society to engage women in peace processes and protect women's rights in conflict and post-conflict situations.
